The oxygen sensor does more than just emissions, it reads the amount of oxygen going out of the exhaust so that the computer can adjust the air/fuel mixture for the engine. You will get poor gas mileage and the longer you drive, the performance of your car will worsen and result in the failure of the catalytic converter. O2 sensors are for emmissions only. You don't have to replace it until you have to go through DEQ. I doubt they would pass your car if the sensor is out.
